Is There Such a Thing as a Utopian Dystopia?

A place where social connection, accessible information, and branding opportunities blossom. But also a place where fake news, addiction, and mental illness are always lurking.

Sounds confusing, right? Unfortunately, this place exists.

Over one billion people visit it every day, including myself.

I am, of course, referring to the social media giant, Facebook. If you have seen the Social Dilemma on Netflix then you already know what I am talking about.

For those who don’t know, The Social Dilemma is a documentary that lays out a case against the privacy policies (or lack of privacy policies) of big technology companies.

The film highlights the concerns of former tech employees who say social media undermines the shared sense of reality that underpins society. It is very interesting, very real, and very scary.

As a marketer, and employee of a digital marketing agency, and because I have a hand in keeping this giant alive through the Facebook ads I run for our clients, I am responsible for knowing the positives and understanding the negatives.

Watching this documentary, inspired me to ask this question; How can we as marketers provide helpful, valuable services while being conscientious of the negative effects they might have on society as a whole?

How do we strike that balance? How do we change so they change?

Y&C can help you and your company navigate these dilemmas through the many verticals we offer. We are staying aware of the increasing issues social media and big tech companies create and face so we are prepared to provide the best service tailored for your company.
