If you\u2019re afraid to fail, you\u2019ll never learn anything.\u201d <\/h2><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphic Designer, Instructor at UC Berkeley, Co-Founder and Creative Director of York &amp; Chapel\u2014the trajectory of Nelson Ho\u2019s career is a unique and interesting one. How did you get here?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve always known that I wanted to own an agency. Mainly because I hate working for other people. [Laughs]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right from the very beginning, I learned a lot from everywhere I worked. And some of those were valuable lessons in how not to run an agency, or a business. People who yelled at each other, demeaned their employees, avoided conflict\u2014and you could see those flaws throughout the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From those places, I learned who I didn\u2019t want to be. More than anything, I learned the importance of treating people honestly. Treating people as people, not just employees. As soon as you look at your team as just a group of employees, you lose that sense of connection with the people you work with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id='what-piece-of-advice-would-you-give-to-creatives-in-the-industry'  id=\"boomdevs_2\" ><b>What piece of advice would you give to creatives in the industry?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou should never be afraid to fail. If you\u2019re afraid to fail, you\u2019ll never learn anything. The reason why I\u2019m in the position I am today is because I was prepared to try new things and risk it not working out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re better off making mistakes when you\u2019re young. The stakes are low when you\u2019re just starting out. Those are the days when making a mistake won\u2019t cost you, or your company, all that much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id='has-the-industry-changed-a-lot-since-you-started'  id=\"boomdevs_3\" ><b>Has the industry changed a lot since you started?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot. Back when I started out, I thought, \u2018Okay, I\u2019m a graphic designer. I\u2019m going to design logos, or brands, or whatever it is.\u2019 The landscape has changed. Few companies are hiring for just those skills anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we first started the company, we were a graphic design agency. We\u2019ve had to pivot a lot. Right now, we\u2019ve moved into Experiential, UI\/UX, and SaaS. But that\u2019s not a bad thing\u2014finding interesting and fun new ways to challenge yourself creatively. It stops you from getting stale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lesson is to find new things to work on, things you enjoy that will keep you switched on and engaged. Professionally, it\u2019s always good to be outside of your comfort zone.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id='is-it-true-you-used-to-go-to-universal-studios-every-weekend'  id=\"boomdevs_4\" ><strong>Is it true you used to go to Universal Studios every weekend?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYep! When I was living in Los Angeles, that was the one splurge I allowed myself. The Universal Studios annual pass cost about $120 a year, parking included. I\u2019d go straight after school\u2014go on two or three rides, then head home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 id='what-s-your-go-to-comfort-food'  id=\"boomdevs_5\" ><b>What\u2019s your go-to comfort food?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA bowl of ramen with fried Spam and a sunny-side-up fried egg. It\u2019s delicious!
